How to Scale a Recipe

Enter the original recipe yield and the number of servings you want. ViciousTools calculates the scaling factor and adjusts ingredient quantities automatically.

For example, if a recipe makes 4 servings and you need 8, the ingredients are multiplied by 2. If you need 2 servings, they are divided by 2.

Scale Recipe Fractions and Measurements

The recipe scaler understands common kitchen fractions and mixed numbers such as 1/2, 3/4, and 1 1/2. It also handles ingredient ranges such as 2–3 eggs and preserves descriptive text such as "softened," "chopped," or "to taste."

How to Double or Halve a Recipe

Use the Half, Original, Double, or Triple buttons for common scaling operations. You can also enter any custom serving or yield amount you need.

Recipe Scaling Tips

Scaling ingredients mathematically does not always mean that every cooking step should be changed by the same amount. Cooking time, pan size, oven temperature, and some ingredients may require adjustment based on the recipe and the quantity being prepared.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a recipe scaler?

A recipe scaler calculates new ingredient quantities when you need more or fewer servings than the original recipe produces.

How do I scale a recipe?

Enter the original yield, enter your desired yield, and paste the ingredients into the recipe scaler. The ingredient quantities are automatically adjusted.

Can I scale a recipe by half or double it?

Yes. Use the Half or Double buttons, or enter your desired yield manually.

Does the recipe scaler handle fractions?

Yes. Common fractions and mixed numbers such as 1/2, 3/4, and 1 1/2 are supported.

Does recipe scaling change cooking instructions?

No. Instructions are preserved as written. Cooking time, pan size, and other preparation details may need to be adjusted separately when substantially changing a recipe.
